As I continue working on this new project I continuously ask myself what does the modern day American male need? Obviously the answers are endless but I’ve been trying to pinpoint some common trends across the board high and low. In Hugh Hefner’s “Philosophy of the Playboy” he was exploring the same idea, more so going in depth on why Playboy was successful. He felt they struck a chord with the men at the time not only for the obvious nudity but also because of the editorial and quality they put into the publication. Obviously the editorial quality vs nudity and what actually led to the success of the magazine is debatable. But in that 270 some odd pages, Hefner really expresses all angles in a very scientific means to look subjectively at why and how they found success. Which was all very interesting to me in terms of what does the current American male need from the aspect of daily information.

Looking around at my peers we’re fed overhyped products that sometimes lack the quality that their attention garners. We’re fed through a media machine that lacks the proper mental nutrients. Now I’m not saying there needs to be a revolution of media as I enjoy most of these facets to a certain degree. But just as the “non-organic” food I enjoy on a daily basis, who knows what the long term corrosive & cancerous effects feeding from this culture will spawn. With this being said I have to balance my critical rhetoric against my appreciation and participation of the machine. As I involve myself with it everyday. But I think it is because of this involvement that I am bored, starved, thirsting for something more, something original. Something that speaks to my generation, my culture, to me and those that will come after. With all the superficial accoutchements that I love, but also he proper nutrients that stimulate healthy mental growth. Perhaps this challenge is a large task. But what else do we live for, why have these creative powers and play them to be small. Whew, this a long winded discretion but it is a short snippet to where my head is at.

Bellow is a piece I’ve started working on that I couldn’t wait to share. As we continue to grow with this idea there is surely more to come:

Modern times must not only be met with a sense of virtue & fortitude but also with a sense of lightheartedness and fun. The modern day male must not forget the urgency of the state of the union but also the appreciation & joy in the freedoms that it represents. The modern American man has true realities to face, economic volatility to remain aware of, domestic & foreign policies affecting both house & home, the unknown threats of an any enemy we are still trying to define. Yet the state of the times is still good. Men both young an old can afford to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
